Anti-Oil Spill Song
by Crystal Fawn
Jun 14, 2010

My band & I wrote a new tune this week to protest and raise awareness of the Deep Water Horizon Oil Rig Disaster that occurred April 20, 2010. Tons of oil continues to gush out at astounding rates, and it's really scary to think of what the long-term consequences will be. We have already seen devastation along the coastlines of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, and more damage is sure to come in the following days or weeks. We uploaded our thought-provoking video to You Tube and our Facebook account, so please watch and do something positive for the environment through donation to a wildlife/environmental fund, volunteer for clean-up, or do your part in reducing your carbon footprint & personal wastefulness. Keep this video and the lyrics in your mind as you go about your day, to prevent needless assault on our environment and habitat, including all the wonderful critters & creatures that take up residence on this planet (and yes, that includes us humans!).

The name of our tune is, "I Just Wanna Rock In a Clean World", and the music & lyrics are written by us, Featured On Fridays! Lead vocals, guitars & melody written by: Brev Sullivan Background vocals, bass & lyrics written by: Crystal Fawn Drums: Buddha

Jemfest X w/ Steve Vai
by Crystal Fawn
Jun 2, 2010

I'll be playing with my band at Jemfest X (10th Anniversary) Guitar Festival in Orlando/Kissimmee, Florida, June 18 & 19th (2 miles from Disney World).  This awesome festival is at the same venue as Steve Vai's "Alien Guitar Secrets" Master Classes that takes place on Sat afternoon, June 19th @ 1pm.  It's a 3 hr workshop with Steve himself, followed by meet & greet, and jam.
I'm pretty sure that there are some tickets still available for Steve's classes, so you might want to check that out here:

Steve Vai's "Alien Guitar Secrets" Master Classes Tickets

As far as the Jemfest X Festival (FREE!!!), that will take place both nights starting @ 7pm (Fri June 18th & Sat June 19th), with a scheduled line-up of performers each night, followed by an OPEN Jemfest-Jam (which means that audience members can participate, groups of 3 guitarists at one time.....G3 style, if you will).    There is full back line, so just bring your guitar/bass/drumsticks and that's it!  There will be a LIVE WEBCAST covering the event both nights.  Watch Steve's promo video for Jemfest:

Rob Balducci will be hosting a FREE clinic on Friday afternoon (June 18th) at the venue, and will be performing his scheduled set on the Saturday evening.  Also, Mike Martin (ex-Fozzy) will perform Sat night as well.

My band (Featured On Fridays) will be performing on Saturday, June 19th @ 7pm, opening the whole line-up that night!!

Mr. Vai will attend the Jemfest festivities, deliver a "keynote speech", and introduce a variety of goodies to be raffled off for his non-profit charity, "MAKE A NOISE FOUNDATION":   Read more about it here: Make a Noise Foundation

* All events will be hosted at THIS VENUE:

RADISSON WORLDGATE RESORT
3011 Maingate Lane, Kissimmee, FL 34747
407.396.1400

Rooms are only $89/night!!!

RAFFLES FOR JEM & UNIVERSE (IBANEZ), rare guitars on display, LIVE WEBCAST  of entire Jemfest event (not Vai's classes though...that's in-person only!) guitar enthusiasts, food, drink, fellow guitar lovers, stage jams open to public, and after-hours room jams with scheduled performers as well as audience attendees.....

****Don't forget the late-night "room jams" that occur in various hotel rooms at this venue.  Just bring your guitar/bass, practice amp, and LET'S JAM!!!!!!   I found this cool video of a past ROOM JAM from Jemfest 2007 to give you an idea...

Late night room jam: Jemfest 2007

Hope to see you there if you are attending this event, or live in the area and are available on either (or both!) of these nights!    My set is scheduled for the Saturday @ 7pm, but I'll be playing in both Jemfest Jams Friday & Sat night (I think it starts at 10 or 10:30pm??) as well as the room jams (of course LOL)
Get back with me if you are attending!

Underrated bands
by Crystal Fawn
Feb 10, 2010
I'd like to dedicate this blog series to underrated bands in the annals of music history.
I like to discover interesting bands that display a high level of musicianship, cool grooves, sonic quality, and overall entertainment value.......sooooooooooo,
my first band pick would have to be...... *drum roll, please*

CAPTAIN BEYOND

This band is the definition of ULTRA COOL, with their progressive chord changes & syncopation, driving grooves, odd-meter sections & fills, and extremely organic vibe.....
I would have to say that this band sounds like the ultimate blend of old Zeppelin, Boston, old 70's era Aerosmith, Rush (Hemispheres era) & Kansas.
What's cool about Captain's songs are that they are very progressive, and while they maintain the groove for the duration of the tune, they add in all sorts of interesting sonic changes and odd-metered timing sprinkled throughout, so it never gets boring. In otherwords, you really can't appreciate the song in only 1 minute of listening. It MUST be played in it's entirety to capture the essence of their musical statement!!!!!

My favorite tunes are:

Distant Sun
Mesmerization Eclipse
Dancing Madly Backwards
Frozen Over

** Take a listen to Frozen Over, and you'll hear a familiar riff......*Kansas, Carry On*....
Frozen Over was from 1972, Carry on from 1977, so Captain Beyond was FIRST! Sounds like Captain Beyond was an influence for many 70's bands

If you have any obscure, underrated bands that you want to add to the list, please add comment below, so I can research their wonderful talents, and maybe write a future blog on them!

Winter NAMM Show 2010
by Crystal Fawn
Jan 29, 2010

The NAMM show in Anaheim, Ca is always a treat, and 2010 show was no exception!!! I spent my time evenly between my sponsor's booths, and visiting cool friends that reside in the California area. I went down with my band, Featured On Fridays, and we did demos at Spectraflex Cables, XOX Audio & Vigier Guitars on Fri & Sat. After we finished the demos, we walked around to the various booths, and checked out other bands & artists' demos as well as new gear & products for 2010.

I picked up a couple of endorsements along the way, "Reunion Blues" gig bags, and "Hot Picks". I did a photo shoot for both Reunion Blues & Hot Picks, so you will find those images on their sites very shortly. I'll post their links when the pics are up.

If you want to see the official NAMM recap video on the NAMM site, it will give you a little taste of the 4 day event.  Look for me in the video, doing a demo at Vigier Guitars w/ Brev Sullivan @ 5:16

OFFICIAL NAMM 2010 RECAP VIDEO

Very special thanks to Don Hertlein from Hertlein guitars for sponsoring our trip & making our arrangements, Tony Franklin from Fender for providing me w/ a Geddy Lee Jazz to play at some of my demos, and Spectraflex Cables, XOX Audio & Vigier Guitars for having us demo at your booths!!

The Fender Showcase wing on the 3rd floor was smokin', and they had all sorts of celebs stop by, including Eddie Van Halen, Stanley Clark, Ted Nugent, and so on....I even got to do a photo shoot for the 50th Anniversary Fender Bass!!! Thanks to Jay & Ryan from Fender for making that happen and being the coolest dudes ever!!!!

The Hilton Lobby was packed each night I was there, and I met a lot of spectacular people there...some were Namm attendees, while others were locals from LA and surrounding areas. What a great time, and I look forward to NAMM 2011 !

Namm 2010 Report
by Crystal Fawn
Jan 18, 2010
Hi everyone!!! Well, I'm back from Winter Namm 2010 in Anaheim, CA. It was really awesome as always, and I was able to meet up with some very cool cats there! Namm always has an interesting array of people, including touring musicians, local & international musicians, business owners, music lovers, retailers, press & photographers. All of that wonderful talent inside of one big building is what makes the magic of Namm for 4 amazing and fun-filled days!!!!! There is so much to do and see, and there are always overlapping events, so it's pretty much impossible to see and do everything, which is why you have to keep going back year after year!!! It's never the same experience, and you never know what's going to happen!
I'll be posting pics and videos, as well as a detailed blog of my Namm experience, so stay tuned....
In the meantime, I am getting ready for a couple of gigs coming up tomorrow, as well as next week, so I'll try to post stuff in between all of that! By next week I should have most of it online!
